New York: Britney Spears has herself to blame for her universally panned performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, for instead of practicing for what was supposed to mark her comeback to the music biz, she spent time doing exactly the opposite.

A source reveals that Britney started of the sorry chain of events a day before the VMAs when she arrived almost three-and-a-half hours late for rehearsal, refused to try out the more complicated dance moves, and changed the outfit she was supposed to wear.
